Burnout rarely arrives suddenly. It builds slowly and quietly, while from the outside everything works: you get the job done, you’re there for your family, you handle what needs handling.
That’s exactly why it’s easy to miss. We brush the signs off: “I’m just tired”, “I’ll recover on holiday”. Then the holiday ends, and the tiredness stays.
Early signs worth noticing
From the moment you wake up, your to-do list is running in your head, and there isn’t a moment that is just yours.
Rest doesn’t recharge you. You sleep, you relax, yet your energy doesn’t come back.
You’re more irritable than before. Little things throw you off balance, and you feel guilty about it afterwards.
What used to bring you joy now feels like just another task.
More and more often you feel you’re just getting through the days, and somewhere along the way you’ve lost yourself in your own life.
Why “pulling yourself together harder” isn’t enough
Many people try to solve this with even more discipline: getting up earlier, writing more lists, performing even better. It may work in the short term, but in the long run it drains what is already running low.
The signs are really saying that something is out of balance: you give too much, and too little comes back to you. Often there is an inner pattern in the background too – for example that you must always please everyone, or that you’re only worth something when you achieve.
What you can do today
Pause for a few minutes each day and ask yourself: how am I really, right now? Don’t answer with your to-do list – answer with what you notice in your body and feelings.
Look at what you could say no to this week – even just one thing.
Find one small activity that is only yours, where you don’t have to achieve anything.
You don’t have to do it alone
These steps help you pause. But if you feel the signs have been with you for a while, it’s worth looking more deeply at what keeps you in this state. In our work, through conscious presence and recognising the patterns underneath, I help you find your way back to yourself, so your days are about your own life again.
Important: if your body or mind is already giving serious signals – lasting sleep problems, exhaustion, hopelessness – please also see a doctor. In that case coaching can be complementary support; it doesn’t replace medical help.
